Hexham Abbey Guild of Bellringers
Save Cancel

Hexham Abbey has 10 bells. The oldest in the tower is the third, cast in 1742, although there were bells in the tower well before this date. The rest of the 8 cast in 1742 have all been recast at different times. The first and second of the 10 were cast at Whitechapel bell foundry in 1999 for a Millennium augmentation of the bells from 8 to 10. The first (and lightest) bell, known in ringing jargon as the "treble", is called "Millennium". The second is called "Peace". Both bells weigh just over 5cwt. The 10th and heaviest bell, known in ringing jargon as the "tenor", was cast in 1924 and weighs just over 21cwt.

More information on the bells may be found at:

Hexham Abbey also has a set of handbells, shown below: image
