The Choir was formed on the 26th May, 1948 when thirteen gentlemen met in the Queen's Hall Cafe, Hexham for the Inaugural meeting. By June, 1948 the Choir had grown to 36 members.
On 11th March the Choir gave its first public performance to raise funds for the Trinity Methodist Church, Hexham. In May, 1950 the Choir recorded six of its favourite songs. Where are those records now?
On 17th March, 1951, the Choir for the first time competed in a Musical Festival and obtained a First Class Certificate at Tynedale. In October the same year, they came fifth in the North of England Music Festival at Blackpool. In 1976, again in the North of England Festival at Blackpool, won the B Class with Allan Armstrong as Conductor. The Hexham Male Voice Choir was now finally recognised and respected throughout the North of England. In 2005 at the Wansbeck Music Festival the Choir received the award of "Distinction" in the male voice competition.
Throughout its history the Choir has been fortunate to have a succession of dedicated and knowledgeable conductors and now in the capable hands of our present Conductor, Allan Armstrong.
After all these years the Choir remains strong with just under 30 members. It is a well balanced, well disciplined and hard working group but remains friendly, informal and fun. The Choir entertains and gives pleasure to others and in doing so continues to raise funds for many local charities.
New members are particularly welcome to the rehearsal nights which are held every Thursday evening at the West End Methodist Church in Hexham at 7.00pm.
The choir celebrated 60 years with a special concert on 23rd May 2008.
